Atelier House

A house that must double as a place for making and showing work needs daylight before it needs anything else, and this design gives it very little else. The main volume is a two-storey pavilion, glazed floor to ceiling on both levels behind a row of slender round columns, with deep recessed terraces doing the shading and sheer curtains doing the rest. Everything is white, so the architecture recedes and the work inside it never has to compete. A low single-storey bar holds the garage and service accommodation across the plot, keeping the pavilion uncluttered. Between the two lies the real room of the house — lawn, a reflecting pool, stepping stones and a sculpture court, reached directly by an external stair from the upper terrace.
